Will the ECB save the euro? | What will the week bring?

created Forex ClubSEPTEMBER 24, 2022

An article published in the Wall Street Journal, in which there were suggestions that the Fed's hike cycle would end, triggered an immediate market reaction. The main US stock indices ended last week close to the highs in the hope that the awaited one pivot The Fed will indeed take place eventually. This week, however, the markets are focusing on the monetary decision of the European Central Bank.

The European Central Bank is dealing the cards

Analytical consensus and market valuation indicate an increase in ECB interest rates at Thursday's meeting by 75 bp. If such an increase does take place, then the main (deposit) rate EBC will be at 1,5%, with expectations that it should not break the level of 2,0% this year. Although the ECB model points to maximum rate hikes to 2,25%, we will probably not hear too much new information from the Bank, as the latest inflation projections will still be unknown on Thursday. Nevertheless, lower and lower energy prices (especially natural gas) in the Old Continent are supporting the euro and should lead to some rebound on the single currency chart.
