Jason Zweig "Your brain, your money" [REVIEW]

created Michał Sielski11 February 2022

Do you consider yourself a conscious investor because you realize that you are making mistakes? Or are you even a step further and you know that your own mind is preparing traps that are easy to fall into when you don't know about them? It doesn't matter - when you read Jason Zweig's book "Your brain, your money", you'll realize what every investor should know: how much you don't know yet. And not about the market, asset valuation, trend analysis or macroeconomic data, but about yourself.

From the very first sentences of Jason Zweig's book it is known that it will be an exciting journey into the unknown and it will be an extremely pleasant journey. The author uses the word in a light way, not avoiding self-irony. That is why even complex processes are described in an easy and accessible way.

The book also contains specific examples that show how easy it is to fall for us, thinking that we can answer easy questions without thinking. Especially when they're really clichéd like this: a bar and chewing gum total $ 1,10, with the bar costing $ 1 more than the gum. How Much Does Gum Cost? $ 0,10, right? Not true ... It is enough to think about it for a moment. Since chewing gum costs 10 cents and a bar is $ 1 more expensive than chewing gum, the bar should cost $ 1,10. So in this case, the total would be $ 1,20 ($ 1,10 for a bar + $ 0,10 for chewing gum). The conclusion is trivial (at least now): chewing gum costs 5 cents and a bar of $ 1,05, which is $ 1,10 and corresponds to simple math that the bar is $ 1 more expensive than chewing gum.

Simple isn't it? But why before that, practically everyone gives the wrong answer and are convinced that it is correct? This is the question that Jason Zweig answers in his book.

A brain for thinking, but also for understanding

I promise, there will be no more spoilers :). The rest of the book, but I can assure you that virtually each of the examples is eye-opening, and sometimes even embarrassing. They are not, however geeky gamesand evidence-based conclusions from specific experiments. Also those to whom the author has self-surrendered.

At the same time, he reveals the alleged advantages of selected managers by analyzing the results of their funds, which in many cases turn out to be… accidental. It's hard to believe sometimes, but it's just as hard to argue with math ...

However, you can argue with yourself, to which the author persuades. And also to think over each investment not once, but twice before its commencement and twice before its completion. Then there is a chance that we will avoid the biggest mistakes. Because as for the fact that almost every investment process is burdened with a whole series of small mistakes, no one after reading this book will have any doubts. On the other hand, it will be easier to find the cause of the mistakes in yourself and learn from them for the future.
