21,1% of Polish traders recorded a profit in 2018 year [KNF Report]

Office Polish Financial Supervision Authority published a report on Forex and Polish traders statistics. A series of interesting statistics was compiled, divided into years from 2014 to 2018, in which data such as realized profit / loss, average profit / loss per customer or average generated financial result were included. Details below.

98,87% traders are retailers

According to the data, the vast majority of traders are customers with retail classification. 1% was slightly above professional customers who, since the introduction of the ESMA guidelines, as the only group may have access to a lever greater than 1: 30 in the European Union.

The study was based on data provided by entities supervised by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority. This means that only traders who use the services of Polish brokerage houses were included in the study. It is not known whether the report counts "many times" a customer who has more than one account with different companies.

Forex statistics up

The table below shows that in 2018 the percentage of clients making a profit increased, and the total value of realized client losses and the average loss per client also decreased compared to 2017. Thus, Forex in Poland, despite the introduction of ESMA's product intervention, has gained popularity, and the number of active clients who closed the year in positive territory increased by over 1000 people. This, however, caused the deterioration of the statistics in the average profit per customer by almost PLN 3. PLN. The average loss per trader also decreased by a similar value, but there were also more such clients - by over 2400 people. This means that there were about 3400 more active Polish traders compared to the previous year.

-576 370 211 PLN That's how many Polish investors have lost

One would think that this is very pessimistic information. Contrary to appearances, when comparing values from the year 2017, it is not. 635 638 422 PLN - exactly this total loss was recorded by traders in the previous year and it was a record value in the last 5 years (21,1%). It is true that the total realized profit decreased in 2018, but by translating the changes in the statistics into percentages, the losses decreased by approx. 10%, while the profits by only 5%.

The average result of the Polish trader

PLN 10 - with this result, on average, the domestic investor ended the balance sheet. This value is very similar to the results from 040, but much better compared to 2016 (improvement by over PLN 2017 towards the plus) and the best in terms of the entire statement. Is it possible that it will get even better? Taking into account the rapidly growing investment awareness of Poles, there is quite a chance for this.

Is ESMA helping or not?

The presented report of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority can be read rather optimistic. Compared to 2017, many parameters have improved. Losses decreased, profits decreased to a lesser extent, there were more customers, and the statistical "Kowalski" lost fewer zlotys. The percentage of profitability has moved towards an improvement and is at a record high.

However, how does this relate to the report published by the Chamber of Brokerage Houses? IDM in the list prepared by him clearly indicates that it is worse (details in a separate article here). The research itself was characterized by a relatively low statistical sample, because it consists of only 459 investors. Its great advantage is the fact that it also includes traders (45%) who have decided to change the broker into an outside European Union and may in practice use greater leverage.

Meanwhile, the PFSA report is much more reliable in terms of statistical sample and illustrates dry figures along with a preview of changes over the years. Analyzing quarterly statistics of Polish brokerage houses for the 4th quarter of 2018 we can also draw conclusions that, however, we are heading for improvement, whether we like it or not.
