Pizza Day today. The ninth anniversary of the purchase of two pizzas for 10 thous. bitcoin

created Michał Sielski22 May 2019

When one of the first diggers bitcoin Laszlo Hanyecz offered to buy two pizzas for 10 thousand. BTC, he had to wait four days for delivery. It cost him about 40 dollars. If Bitcoins were kept to this day, it would be worth around PLN 312. To commemorate this event, 22 May is celebrated with Pizza Day, already known not only in the cryptocurrency environment.

You can laugh that Laszlo Hanyecz made the worst deal of his life, but nine years ago he obtained a solid dinner almost completely for free. He was one of the most active participants in the Bitcointalk.org cryptocurrency forum. He also dug Bitcoins. A lot and quickly, because acquiring Bitcoins was initially much more effective. As assumed, this task is becoming more and more difficult - with the passage of time and the growing number of Bitcoins on the market.

Financial crisis and Bitcoin

18 May 2010 in the memory of many people was still a financial meltdown. Many people felt its tangible results. Meanwhile, the crypto-currency has been underway for months to prevent similar events in the future and to make the world independent of the financiers' excesses. One of the most active people in the development of technology and digging Bitcoins was a Jacksonville resident in Florida Laszlo Hanyecz.

On May 18, 2010, on the cryptocurrency forum, he proposed that he would finally like to change the Bitcoin mined for a long time into something specific. He wrote that he would be happy to exchange 10. BTC for two large pizzas delivered to your home. Back then, 1 Bitcoin cost about 0,4 cents, so the transaction was about $ 40 - the average price for a home delivery of two large pizzas. He waited four days for implementation, because initially there were no people willing to make such a transaction. In the end, however, it worked.

Two pizzas are not enough

What's more, in the following days he continued to maintain his offer and make further purchases. How many? This is not known exactly, but it is said that the pizza ordered 10 times, so he spent 100 on it. Bitcoin. 4 August 2010, however, had to withdraw, because there were more and more willing.

“Well, I didn't expect it to be so popular, but I can't afford to keep doing it because I can't generate thousands of coins a day. Thanks to everyone who bought me a pizza, but I'm holding the action for now " - he wrote less than three months after the first purchase.

Here you can follow the whole conversation, as well as comments from those who, in retrospect, evaluate the transaction:

Another order in 2019 year

After nine years, 25 February 2019 the next transaction took place with the participation of Laszlo Hanyecza. Again he exchanged two pizzas for Bitcoins, but this time he had to sacrifice much less. Laszlo paid his friend in London through the Lightning Network, which ordered two pizzas at his home address. It cost him 649 thousand. satoshi, or "Bitcoin pennies", which translates to 0.00649 BTC. The transaction fee was 6 cents.

“This deal shows how the Lightning Network can work in day-to-day transactions. It didn't have to be my friend. A local pizzeria itself could accept Bitcoin directly through its Lightning Network node. The point is, with the Lightning Network, we can get Bitcoin security and instant transactions. You do not have to wait for confirmation on the blockchain " - says Laszlo Hanyecz, who - as you can see - thanks to the memorable transaction, is also a valuable morsel for the advertising industry, which willingly uses its popularity.

All Bitcoins delivered for pizza?

If our hero had 10 Bitcoins would be worth over PLN 300 million. In the peak period, their valuation would even exceed 1 billion. zloty. It is not known, however, whether he should be the subject of jokes, because he never disclosed how many of the excavated Bitcoins he kept, how long he kept them, and whether and when he exchanged them for a different currency. Especially that acquiring Bitcoin at the beginning was much faster than today, and leaving "only" a few thousand would allow for a really prosperous life today.
