The Turkish lira seems to be in a permanent crisis. Over the decade, both USDTRY and EURTRY have marched consistently upwards - in the case of EURTRY from 2,00 in 2010 to over 4,5 at the end of 2017, without any major downward correction. There was a very good reason behind the weakness of the lira, namely inflation. At a time when central banks are unsuccessfully trying to create greater inflationary pressure, Turkey is unable, or even deliberately unwilling, to contain it - inflation dynamics is well above acceptable levels. The Turkish central bank would actually like to do more to save the day. However, the obstacle is the resistance of President Erdogan, who has been pressing the bank for a long time, threatening its independence. In addition, political clashes with the United States and the EU (especially with Germany) mean that the latest rally of the pair up by almost 10 pips is not surprising.
