Brexit delay passed with one voice

created Michał SielskiApril 4 2019

Surprising result of the night vote in the British parliament. After a series of quarrels and proposals without support, the House of Commons agreed with the Labor Party's proposal to prevent the so-called hard Brexit. One vote prevailed.

The proposal of the opposition Labor Party is in line with the expectations of experts who are afraid of leaving the UK from the European Union without a contract. Hard Brexit would be a problem for the economy of both the EU and Great Britain, and every vote on it introduces nervousness in the currency market.

One voice of advantage

This time, however, it worked. Although the debate on the Labor proposal lasted over six hours on Wednesday, it was finally passed just before midnight. There were 313 votes in favor, 312 against, so only one vote decided.

Now, Prime Minister Theresa May is obliged to ask the EU to delay brexit at least until April 12. Earlier, the head of the EC ruled out such a solution.

"Until April 12, and not a day longer, the British House of Commons has time to adopt the Brexit deal - says the head of the EC Jean-Claude Juncker. - We will work until the last minute to avoid a hard Brexit - ensure.

According to him, the signing of the UK's exit agreement is to take place on 22 May at the latest.

Theresa May for and even against

Interestingly, Prime Minister Theresa May, who supported the extension of the negotiations, voted ... against. She is against the powers of the House of Commons, which could weaken the negotiating position with Brussels.

The law must still be approved by the House of Lords, or the upper house of the British Parliament, which will deal with it on Thursday. Of course, the consent of the European Union will also be necessary.
