MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is the (inexorable) future

created Paweł Mosionek8 February 2017

When the fifth installment of the most popular retail platform debuted on the market in 2009 - MetaTrader 5 (MT5) - traders' disappointment was huge. It was supposed to be a breakthrough and the beginning of setting new standards. Meanwhile, it turned out that the number of modifications and "innovations" that were introduced did not appeal to the clientele. It happened so, inter alia, by removing the possibility of hedging positions and the introduction of a new programming language).

So there was no breakthrough, which was also noticed by brokers who preferred to stick to the hackneyed and well-known MT 4 than to experiment with something new, which largely resembled what is already available on the market. Russian programmers got down to work, but they were developing two versions in parallel. At the same time, functionalities that were introduced in MT4 were added to MT5, and although it sounds nonsense, it turned out to be true. Paradoxically, the option of hedging positions to MT5 has also been added :-). Narrowing down the differences between platforms is an interesting form of strategy to eventually slowly convince the clientele to the new platform. So far, for 8 years, the satisfactory effect has still not been achieved, but who knows what will be soon ...?

Progress Effect and MT5

Currently, the newest version is MetaTrader 5 build 1525, which was released at the end of January 2017. The number means the "update" version, but they are not always released every one unit up (sometimes there are jumps by even several dozen numbers). However, for comparison, his older brother is available in version 1045, although it has been on the market twice as long. This shows what MetaQuotes is currently focusing on or how much underdeveloped product they have released.

MQ announced that it will soon stop supporting MetaTrader 4 completely.

But it can't be done just like that. Whatever the case, still 80% retail Forex brokers offers its clients this platform (often in parallel with others, also MT5), and despite 14 years of presence on the market, it still cannot be called perfect. Nevertheless, you can already see the first symptoms that we will say goodbye to MT4 for good in the near future.

Brokers offering MetaTrader 5

Recently, the following companies announced the introduction of MT5 to the offer:

  • BCS Forex,
  • InstaForex (large Asian broker),
  • LiteForex,
  • ActivTrades,
  • Just2Trade,
  • US Broker
  • and Halifax Investment Services.

These are relatively unknown companies in Europe, but MQ itself reports that over 170 brokers already have a new product on offer MetaQuotes.

There is only one in the home yard - TMS Brokers. From the more famous brands, access to MT5 is provided by e.g. FxPro or IC Markets. There is also a new broker - CentroFX. The company boldly decided to base its services exclusively on MT5, without offering 4, as the others do. Were they predicting the future? We cannot talk about the "snowball effect" yet, but undoubtedly something has started to happen and in our opinion it is a matter of 1-2 years until the old "eM-Te four" will leave us.
