Poles earn more and more on the Forex market. And they lose more and more

created Michał SielskiApril 5 2023

The average investor from Poland lost on Forex market PLN 2022 in 10, and yet more and more people are trying their hand at this difficult market. This is the result of the statistics that have just been presented by the Polish Financial Supervision Authority. However, they also show that the average profits among players who earn on the market are increasing.

Polish Financial Supervision Authority every year sums up the achievements of Polish speculators on the Forex market. The data comes from all brokers that operate on our market. They must report them in detail at the end of the year. Thanks to this, we know how their clients deal with leveraged financial instruments.

The number of active investors is growing

The data clearly shows that the number of people who want to invest in the Forex market is growing rapidly. While in 2021, brokers informed the KNF that they had just over 111. active customers, last year there were already 142 accounts. This is a substantial increase of as much as 182%. Moreover, never in history, since the Polish regulator keeps statistics, have there been so many active accounts maintained by brokers operating in Poland.

So did the Poles rush to the Forex market? Yes and no, because it turns out that 71 clients have a Polish residence, and the rest are from abroad. So it also shows that our brokers are becoming more and more global, attracting clients from other countries as well. But it also puts Poland in a good light – although we often complain about restrictions affecting the financial market, thousands of people choose Polish brokers instead of e.g. Cypriot or British ones. And even if we take into account the fact that probably a large part of them do not do it consciously, this number is still impressive.

Who loses and who earns on Forex in Poland?

The Office of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (UKNF) summarized the results of investors CFD and the percentage share of earners and losers is almost the same as in previous years.

– The analysis shows that the majority of active clients (79%) lose money on transactions on this type of instruments. In 2022, the percentage of customers who suffered a loss increased. Both the average profit and the average loss per customer increased. – The average result per customer was a loss (greater than in the previous year). In 2022, the total value of losses incurred by losing clients was almost four times the total value of profits of profitable clients. About 70-80% of active clients lose money on the Forex market on a regular basis - sums up the KNF.

However, the total profit realized by customers in 2022 increased to PLN 519 from PLN 476 in 766. The average profit per customer also increased to PLN 413 in 210. In the twelve months of 926, it was PLN 2021 average annual profit. Interestingly, the number of people who made a profit decreased. In 2022, there were 17 successful investors, while in 444 there were 2021.

However, the number of people losing their money has increased. In 2021, there were 80 investors who had to accept the loss of the value of their investment portfolio, and in 488, 2022 investors experienced failure. The average loss per account also increased. From PLN 112 to PLN 402 per year.

2022 - the worst year for Forex investors

Last year was the worst for CFD investors in the last 5 years. Despite considerable volatility, which - at least theoretically - could be conducive to earning, the largest percentage of customers suffered a loss. Apparently, the volatility was too great, and the directions of price changes were not entirely obvious. This translated into the fact that 79,1% of investors made a loss (71,9% the year before). The average loss per customer was PLN 10, compared to PLN 237 a year earlier.
