Rafał Janik – Book about investing volume 1 [Review]

created Michał SielskiJanuary 5 2023

There are few easy-to-read books on difficult topics. "Book about investing, volume 1" however, this is just such a position - and a must-have, not only for beginners. Investors on every level will find something for themselves here: from wondering what the price-to-book ratio means, to discussing the smallest details in the field of investing psychology.

Books about investing often surprise with their titles. There is no shortage of magicians, virtuosos, masters, as well as strategies and systems. Rafał Janik did not marvel. His book is simply titled... "Book about investing". If this is the intention of the author, he couldn't have come up with a better one. Because the title accurately reflects what makes the book stand out: the simplicity of the message.

Some people like to complicate simple things. Trading systems and strategies in particular can be difficult at first glance. Meanwhile, the best traders in the world emphasize that they owe their successes and millions of dollars to the simplicity.

book value? It could be a scam

Therefore, it is worth recommending this position to everyone. Even those who consider themselves experts in investing. On the one hand, it is worth going back to the basics sometimes and refreshing your knowledge, on the other hand - I bet - there are still a lot of people who have no idea that such a basic indicator of listed companies as book value does not have to be reliable, because e.g. the accountant did not want or did not have time to update the value of acquisitions made, for example, 10 years ago. Such examples, supported by facts from Polish companies, are numerous in this book.

Its incredible advantage is also an orderly structure. At the end of each chapter, you will find the most important aspects that are worth remembering.

Every bubble will burst at some point

We will learn e.g. the fact that although the market is always right, it does not always react appropriately to specific events right away. And this can be used to sell or buy shares at a convenient time when they are priced above or below their real value. The author gives examples of how to recognize that the market is not overheated at the moment. Because it's not easy.

– Speculative bubbles are difficult to identify – the actual phase of a bubble is usually preceded by a long-term period that fits into the definition of a traditional bull market – says Rafał Janik. “Whatever the reason, every bubble eventually bursts and prices become more real. However, the moment when this will happen is unknown - he adds.

How to invest to earn

Beginner investors will also appreciate the last part of the book, in which Rafał Janik leads by the hand all those who want to start their adventure with investing. He shows how to build your portfolio, giving concrete examples as usual and avoiding focusing on clichés about "you must not put all your eggs in one basket" and investments should be diversified. He rightly points out that diversification has its good, but also bad sides, when we invest too little in potentially the most profitable assets and our profit will be much smaller, although seemingly safer.

Well, apparently - this is also a key word, because appearances can be deceiving, especially on the stock exchange and financial markets. After reading "Books on Investing" We certainly won't be fooled easily.
