Twitter and mass media stars used to steal Bitcoins

created Michał SielskiJuly 17 2020

“I feel generous about Covid-19. I'll double every BTC deposit to my wallet for the next hour. Good luck and be safe " - such an entry along with the address of the BTC wallet appeared on Twitter of famous people and companies. Among them, among others Jeff BezosKim Kardashian, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, Tesla or Uber. Of course, it was not posted by account owners, and the wallet address belongs to someone else. In this way, the fraudsters managed to extort thousands of dollars. Tweets also appeared on the accounts of famous people from the world of cryptocurrencies.

Today it is known that this is the biggest hack in the history of Twitter. A hacker, or a group of hackers, took over the accounts of the largest companies and the richest people in the world.

The situation related to the coronavirus pandemic caused many people to wonder - even for a moment - what is really important in life. Or at least many of us hope they've thought about it… So many have believed that famous companies and billionaires have decided to share their wealth.

I'm generous, I'll double my donation

The same entry appeared on all of them, telling about being generous and doubling every donation in Bitcoinach. It is worth adding that the hijacked accounts are watched by millions of people, so even if only a handful of them were fooled, the fraudsters could count on a lot of earnings. And they didn't miscalculate. Some of the money can be traced thanks to the fact that criminals chose Bitcoin, and not one of the anonymous cryptocurrencies that encrypt transaction data in the blockchain. On the other hand, it is not surprising - thanks to BTC they could be credible and count on the greatest profits. Thanks to this, we know that yesterday it was over 150. USD with over 400 transactions.

Twitter hacked. Again.

This is another major attack on Twitter accounts and their hacking. In February 2020, the accounts of the Olympic movement and the world-famous football team FC Barcelona were taken over. Back then, OurMine hackers also managed to extort money from unaware people. However, these were individual account hacks that could be organized using phishing software, which didn't have to be overly complicated.

Now, however, we were dealing with hacking not on accounts, but bypassing the security of the entire Twitter. The company has already admitted that its employees, who had access to internal systems and programming algorithms and passwords, were hacked. Twitter also does not rule out the possibility that one of its employees could have granted access to the software.

As if that were not enough, entries could not be deleted for a long time after the attack. The hackers changed their access data right away, so account owners could not log in to them, even if they quickly discovered that someone was impersonating them.

Fortunately, Twitter reacted relatively quickly. The entries were deleted and the owners regained access to the accounts within hours.

What does this teach us? First of all, caution when making financial decisions, even if we are encouraged (or so we think) by well-known people. In addition, it is also worth taking a distance from the virtual world, because - as you can see - it is more and more often a crooked mirror of reality.
