Easter holidays by 24 percent. more expensive than a year ago

Christmas this year will be on average 24 percent. more expensive than a year ago. Especially cake lovers will get the pocket money, because the prices of sugar, eggs and flour have become much more expensive. Sugar is twice as expensive in stores today as it was at Easter a year ago, although it only increased by 14% in the global markets during this time. 

Easter holidays as expensive as ever

Over the past year, the basket consisting of the 10 most important Christmas food products purchased by Polish families has increased by 24 percent. Sugar, which is almost twice as expensive today as a year ago, recorded the greatest increases. Too eggflation is an important phenomenon in Poland, as egg prices soared by 47 percent. up. Despite the recent drop in cereal prices, flour in stores has increased by 36 percent since the previous Christmas, as did the price of pork loin. The price of milk today is ⅓ higher than a year ago, while bread costs ¼ more. None of the products we analyzed went down in price over the last year, the lowest - by 2%. butter became more expensive - but it had previously experienced a serious increase in price. 

The basket of basic products increased by 24 percent, while according to the Central Statistical Office, food and beverage price inflation amounted to 22 percent in March. y/y, and general consumer inflation 16,2 percent. This shows that for many Polish families, especially those less affluent, inflation is more severe than the general data would suggest. And on the occasion of holidays, when we buy more food than usual, higher prices are especially painful for Polish families. 

Some products in Polish stores went up in price despite a drop in their prices on global markets. In Poland, the price of milk increased by 33% during the year, while on the world markets its price in PLN decreased by 36%. In the case of sugar, its price in Poland increased at a record high, while on the global markets the price increase was only 14 percent. It should be noted, however, that within two years the global price of sugar increased by 59%, which means that the process of adjusting prices in Poland to world prices takes place in the long term.
