Hackers asked for cryptocurrencies on the site of ... Donald Trump

created Michał SielskiSEPTEMBER 28, 2020

At the end of the pre-election campaign in the US, the campaign site of Donald Trump was hijacked by hackers who posted a message encouraging to deposit cryptocurrencies on their accounts Monero.

The US presidential election will be held on November 3, 2020. Polls in recent days are tipping in favor of the current president's rival candidate, Joe Biden. As if that were not enough, the still incumbent US President Donald Trump has additional problems. On Tuesday evening, the website of his presidential campaign was hacked. After 19 p.m. in the "News" tab, you could read the message posted by the hackers with the following content:

“This site has been taken. The world is tired of the fake news that President Donald Trump spreads daily.

Next, we had information that the hackers had data that confirmed the fact that the authorities were involved in the creation of the coronavirus and are cooperating with foreign entities to manipulate the election results. However, they did not substantiate these revelations with any evidence.

Instead, they posted two addresses from the Monero cryptocurrency network, kindly asking Internet users to deposit funds for them ...

Who broke into Donald Trump's website?

It is not known whether the attack was the act of a group that just wanted to earn, or it was politically motivated. Forbes journalists note that "The grammar in the message points to hackers whose first language is not English".

"Earlier this evening, the Trump campaign site was also attacked and we are working with law enforcement to investigate the source of the attack." We emphasize that no sensitive data was exposed as none of it is actually stored on the site "  - Tim Murtaugh, director of communications on Donald Trump's team told Forbes.

Hackers like cryptocurrencies

Let's remind that there was a major hacking attack on Twitter in July, as a result of which at least 150 thousand USD went to criminals.

“I'm being generous about Covid-19. I will double every BTC deposit to my wallet for the next hour. Good luck and be safe " - such an entry along with the address of the BTC wallet appeared on Twitter of famous people and companies.

Among them were, among others Jeff Bezos, Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, Tesla or Uber. Of course, it wasn't posted by the account owners, and the wallet address belonged to someone else. Tweets also appeared on the accounts of famous people from the world of cryptocurrencies.

Uncertainty is rising, stock prices are falling

Then the hackers were caught. They turned out to be very young people detained by the US services. Currently, there is no trace of burglars, and the losses are also purely image-related. Of course, this may have an impact on the election results, and they will have an undeniable impact on the US stock market. Already now, after dynamic changes in the polls and growing uncertainty, US stock prices are falling. Undoubtedly, it is also influenced by the second wave of coronavirus and the increase in the incidence of Covid-19 also in the US.

Increasing uncertainty makes investors prefer to withdraw funds from risky assets, and stocks are undoubtedly one of them. Although hackers did not do much damage, suggesting once again (before the previous elections it was similar) that not only two players are involved in the game for the most important political office in the world, but also intelligence or interviews of foreign countries does not put the American economy. Investors prefer to withdraw at least part of their capital, which obviously affects the sell-off of companies listed on US stock exchanges.
