How to safely use VPS by trading on Forex

VPS, or the trader's biggest friend using automated strategies (Expert Advisors). The virtual machine allows us, above all, to maintain the continuity of our robot's work on the MetaTrader 4 platform (but also another platform that supports the machines only with the application turned on). Thanks to this, there is no need to leave the computer turned on around the clock. This time we will try to introduce you to how to use VPS safely.

# 1 - Change connection port

Access to the remote desktop is set by default through the 3389 port. Most attacks on RDP (ang. Remote Desktop Protocol), that is, a protocol that allows communication with the graphic terminal service in Microsoft Windows (Terminal Services), takes place through this port. It's a good idea to change it. Before doing this, however, consider other services your VPS may want to use.

# 2 - Make a backup regularly

VPS service providers very often offer the option of creating complete backups (so-called snap shot VPS), or allocate "additional" disk space for their creation. In the event that our server is attacked by hackers, thanks to the backup we will be able to restore all settings and programs running on the VPS very quickly.

# 3 - Monitor the performance of your VPS

VPS service providers often offer a server performance monitoring service. It is definitely worth thinking about. In case of failure, the provider will send us an e-mail or SMS about the encountered problem. In case of VPS failure and / or lack of connection of the platform with the broker's server, your machine will stop working. You, on the other hand, will have the chance to react. If you happen to be left with no open positions, it will be of little concern. Worse if EA was to oversee those that have already been opened.

# 4 - Set the IP address for connecting to the VPS

If you have a fixed IP address (or you connect via VPN) and only you use the server, it is worth securing in an additional way. The best solution is to exclude all IP addresses, except for one from which you will connect to the VPS. Thanks to that, you can almost be sure that no one else will come to your server.

# 5 - Don't use your VPS to the limit

Excessive load on the server may result in its slow operation, freezing or incorrect operation. This is the last thing we would like. Therefore, monitor the degree of use of resources (e.g. by task manager) and make sure that the processor is not loaded more than 40%. Also, make sure you have a reserve in the event of a spike in market volatility, which may translate into a temporary increase in CPU usage.

In the event that you are approaching a dangerous line, or you notice temporary spikes in resource utilization above the “normal” level, think about lightening your VPS or purchasing a more powerful machine.

# 6 - Update your software

Use the current versions of the software - both the operating system and the trading platform. Thanks to this, you are less exposed to possible problems with safety or stability of operation. However, remember a few things:

  1. Update OS on the weekend when the market does not work,
  2. After the OS update, restart the system,
  3. After updating the platform, restart it,
  4. The next time you start MT4, check if all EAs are properly launched and configured.

Good luck!
