NIKKEI 225 is Japanese index of 225 largest companies on the local stock exchange. The Japanese stock exchange is the fourth largest stock exchange in the world - it is only ahead of the stock exchanges in the US and London. It includes many global giants - Toyota is the largest of them, which is also 21st on the list of 100 largest companies in the world. There are also brands such as Sony, Pionner, Canon, Mitsubishi and Nissan.

The first, regular (daily) index quotations were started in December 1971 - they are calculated by the journal Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The composition of NIKKEI 225 is reviewed once a year. The index reached its historical maximum in December 1989 (39 260 points) and since then the value of quotations has never even come close to these levels.
